I have a 1994 GM Chevrolet and I want to know why it idles up and down and why it don't want to take throttle sometimes

sometimes very simple things need to be actually looked at and listened to, to start is there any dash light on,check air filter to see if its filthy,listen under the hood for the sound of sucking air.
