Losing gas bad

Asked by Jun 23, 2017 at 07:27 AM about the 1998 GMC Sierra 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I just got a 1998 gmc Sierra 4x4 1500. I filled
the tank up last night and drive home. (About a half
mile. I drove to work this morning, which is 24
miles away. My needle indicates that I have less
than half a tank. I checked to see if I had a leak and
nothing. I don't smell gas either. At one point I
literally watched the needle go downward. Does
anybody have any ideas what the problem could
be? Thanks

Could be a bad tank sender, if it was using that much fuel you would see black smoke and it would run rough, if it was leaking that much fuel you would smell it. Now if it has dual tanks sometimes the switching valve gets messed up ang it starts dumping the return fuel into the other tank.
