what could cause the check gauge to come on? GMC 98 1500 Sierra 4x4

I have seen it come on 3 times now real quick each time then off

That is letting you know that there is a start of a engine miss fire. You may need a tune up. A miss fire can cause damage to the catalytic converter, so it needs to be taken care of. I would say to go to an auto parts store to have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, but one usually does not get set with a flashing check engine light, just when it stays on it sets a code in the computer. You could see tho, they would do it for you and if there are any codes, write them down.
