1980 Mercury Zephyr

Asked by Ross Sep 11, 2019 at 01:59 PM about the 1980 Mercury Zephyr

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1980 mercury zephyr with 3.3 i6 and a 3 speed
auto. The i6 is super anemic and I'd like to swap it out. Any
cheap swaps that anyone knows of. (I would love an ls
swap but I'm in college so that's not happening). Would a
v8 kill the transmission?

85HP on the I6. Your car is the twin of the Ford Fairmont. You can swap in a 5.0L V8 from a Foxbody mustang and the T5 manual transmission. Depending on the model year engine, carb vs EFI, you will need the required wiring and PCM and other modifications. It's finding one that might be difficult. Swaps are not cheap no matter how much, as it's all custom work, especially if you have someone else do it. You also want to upgrade the brakes too. Your going to have thousands into the car. http://www.roadkill.com/uncommon- performance-the-other-fox-body-fords/

It's going to be a project for the next few years. It is a carberated engine. My girlfriend is going to help a lot, she was a fleet mechanic at westar energy. She's done transmission swaps before. Thank you for the advice. I'm fairly new to this and it helps a lot.
