Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 99 mustang i just bought it has a 3.8 v6 auto. when i first bought it a couple of weeks ago it would take a sec to take off in drive. when i would drive it in overdrive it would jerk every once a while after i took it out of od it stopped jerkin. after i drove it about 70 miles or so it stopped pullin at a stop sign.i put in reverse and backed up out of road and had it pulled home. i pulled tranny pan off and fluid was burnt bad.  the odometer not workin. guy i bought from said it had about 183000 on it but he couldnt tell me much about car. i did a history report on car and it said the car was totaled and completely rebuilt twice. dont know if i should have tranny rebuilt or get another one

Rebuild the transmission. The burnt fluid is your tell tale sign he lied to you big time ! WHOA, after reading "a history report on car and it said the car was totaled and completely rebuilt twice" my advice to you would be to ditch the death trap ASAP ! Better to lose money then your life, cause my mind asks the question of "What next WILL GO WRONG at the worst time". Its not a question of will something go wrong, you know that answer already.

i will keep the car. Its not to be blamed for how other people drove it or took care of it

An overhaul is typically $1500 to $1800. i would want to evaluate the vehicle from Bumper to Bumper before I spent that kind of money on it. I've had some luck with transmissions from dismantlers. Most have a very limited warranty that they'll sell you for a few extra dollars - they'll replace the trans if the one you get isn't any good. Be certain to flush the cooler lines or risk putting debris back into your transmission. Enjoy your car!
