2004 GMC not holding oil pressure

Asked by Shellrock Jan 26, 2017 at 03:19 AM about the 2004 GMC Yukon XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I turn the car on it shows only about 10 on
the oil pressure and I hear knocking. Flushed out
all the old oil and did full oil and filter change. After
the oil change when I first started it up and acted
the same on 5 to 10 for a few sec then it jump up.
it looks fine. Turned it off later I went to start it
again and it did the 5 to 10 and stayed there.
sounded horrible knocking again and no oil
pressure? No leaks?? Any ideas?

If this is a high mileage engine, it may be just worn out. Knocking is not good, worn crank & cam shaft bearings. You could try a new oil pump but it would be expensive to do. It is located on the front of the engine. Timing chain cover would have to come off. Or you could pull some bearing caps off the rods, and look at the condition of the bearings.
