cv joint bearing?

im looking at buying a old 87 subaru leone.thing is it goes into gear sweet as but let the clutch out and it doesnt go anywhere but makes a winding noise down by the cv area...like its slipping the cogs or something.the dude selling it said it just the bearing need to be replaced,is he right?.pretty hard to explain but any help would be muchly apprieciated

sounds like the cv shaft is broken at the joint by the wheel, look for a torn rudder boot
