Sounds like the actuator on the transfer case is stuck,or bad dash switch,you can try resetting the ECM by removing the positive cable for a few minutes may reset it,but before you remove cable,make sure to remove you key from ignition,then remove the cable,

All so make sure it is switched into 2 wheel drive.

This happened on my Ford also, I tapped on the transfercase shift motor while my wife pushed the 2WD button and it went into 2WD, so. Replace the unit and no more troubles shifting in and out of 4WD. HTH

We replace the xfer motor like tennissoes suggest at the dealer due to not being used frequently enough more than you would think.

Man Guy why would you have the dealer do it, it is a really easy replacement if you follow the instructions included.

Not that I would have the dealer do it, It's that common a problem is all.
