Form Bantam apparent faulty ignition switch

Asked by GuruB8H15 Jan 12, 2019 at 10:26 AM about the Ford Bantam

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2003 Bantam 1.6 XLT
When I turn on the ignition . dash lights all come on. When I turn further to
start motor...Ignition to ECU does not turn starter consistently...Kicks in
starter for a second or 2 then dead. even if I attempt numerous times does
the same. Seems signal or current not getting through. Had alternator
replaced recently, Battery is strong.
If I jump the starter to positive on battery - starts fine.
Could this problem be the ignition switch is faulty ..ie the key barrel worn out
?
If so , what is the most economical solution without having to have keys/
ECU etc recoded.

Check the main starter cable from the battery to the starter. Check the current draw on this cable. It's not the key coding. If it was there would be no sound from the stater or clicking noise at all. Check also the starter solenoid cable. Check the Spesific Gravity in each of the battery cells. There could be a cell that is faulty.
