why is the power steering in my 2000 ford windstar grey again after i just drained it and filled it up with new clear fluid? wh at could be the problem

Sounds like metal shavings. Very fine.could be from pump or from the rack n pion steering.

how do you know which one it is? how do i go about checking them? i want to fix the problem before something worse breaks on this car

Remember, when you changed out the fluid, even though you put in new fluid, there was a certain amount left in the lines and steering. Probably normal as that would have caused your clean fluid to get grey.
