dodge neon no power under acceleration

we have a1998 neon auto 4 door this car is EXTREMELY gutless it hardly wants to go up a hill at all. If you push it to down shift it puts itself into nueteral. if anyone can help i would be very gratfull. i am at the point of junking it soon. please help me save her.

Sounds like its gonna need a trans - those transmissions never lasted very long off the shelf. Once professionally rebuilt they last a while.
