Durango sputters after running for short time

Asked by GuruRHW9T Feb 09, 2020 at 12:41 PM about the 1998 Dodge Durango

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1998 Durango starts fine. Within a few minutes of starting it will sometimes
start sputtering. The sounds vary from sounding like it is starved of gas to
more of a backfiring sound. It happens on flats and hills, at slow speeds and
highway speeds. The problem will last between a few seconds and several
minutes. Once the problem clears the car runs fine until I turn it off. Turning it
back on allows the problem to return. It may work fine for a month and then
act up every time I use it for a week or two. When it happens I can sometimes
clear it more quickly by gunning the engine for a short distance. Of course it
does not act up at the mechanics. The fuel pressure is fine when not acting up.
