If it won't pass smog you are in trouble of course- In Cali. you can't drive it and you can't sell it- screwed- but that Defender is a cool ride- we're not talkin' Range Rover here, baby! The real thing- can we see a picture? Any rust? This might be worth doin' somethin' with

I guess we're talking Lucas 14CUX (aka hotwire) EFI here, so here's a nice amount of info for you(r mechanic): http://www.britishv8.org/articles/rover-14cux-efi.htm this will help you to get to the cause of your problem without me having to type it all out for you. I am in a lazy mood today :-P
