when do u drive with the over drive on

I have a 2000 ford contour 6 cylinder i have driven with the over drive on for 2 years and just learned it was suppose to be off i\unless i was climbing hills is this correct.

No no. The O/D should be on, unless you are going up /down steep grades. Whoever told you that has it backwards.

David is correct, the only time I turn mine off is for extra engine braking when coming to a stop from speed.
