Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 Dodge Neon Tranmission issue. I
have a neon with 103,000 miles. my son
came home last week and said the car
check engine light was on and car shaking
bad. I took it in and it was the spark plugs
that needed to be changed. drove great so I
asked them to put in new motor mounts
because they were broken. They put one on
the top of engine. I drove the car home and
it ran great. when I got out of the car I
thought I ran over a nail because sounded
like tire was quickly losing air, but none of
my tires were going flat. Next day my son
drives it down the street and check engine
light goes on at stop light and car will no
longer move in drive. Reverse is great, but
no other gear works. Of coarse the check
engine light is no longer on. Could the air
sound have anything to do with it? Does
this mean my transmission is shot?

The first thing you need to do is check the fluid level and condition. If fluid level is low - add fluid to get it within the full range. While checking the fluid level - look closely at the fluid color. If it is really dark or near black - smell it. It it smells burnt then the transmission has suffered internal damage and will need to be rebuilt or replaced. If fluid is red or even brown and does not smell burnt then the problem may be electrical in nature, which would be a good thing because most electrical problems can be repaired without removing the transmission. To summarize: If fluid is dark colored and smells burnt - you have an internal failure and the transmission must be removed and inspected to determine what happened. If fluid is red or brown and does not smell burnt then you need to visit a local transmission shop to have a transmission scan done, which will tell you where the problem is. You have to go to a transmission shop to get this type of scan done - it's not the same type of scanner that Autozone and regular auto repair shops use - it is a special transmission scanner.
