Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Whenever i am stopped at a stop light my car jumps in a forward motion and sometimes dies when im stopped for to long. It also has a habit of dying when i have to drive at a slower speed or when i am accelerating. Just the other day it died while i was driving it. I really need to find a solution before this car does some serious damage.

Are there any Service Engine lights coming on? There are several things to check here. One is the torque convertor on the transmission. This could account for the jumping forward, etc. A bad input speed sensor in the trans could also account for this, as well as for the stalling. It sounds as though there is a PCM problem or sensor fault that is causing the engine to lunge or misfire badly. You might check your throttle position sensor as a culprit. Any of these things should throw a code, however. If you're not seeing any codes, you may have an internal PCM problem that will require replacement of the PCM. Of course, you might also check your battery with regards to the stalling at slow speeds. We brought an '01 Durango into the service dept. today which was doing just that, stalling whenever it was idling or driven at low speeds. Battery output was less than 8.5 volts and the alternator was going into self-preservation mode and shutting off along with the charging circuit, causing the vehicle to stall.

check gaskets and hoses for any leaks. One trick would be to hook up a fog machine to the intake manifold, and see where the smoke comes out

I had same problem with the engine revving and going forward while trying to stop. Some wiring was corroded and was replaced at the dealer.
