Get the codes read at the parts store. Write down the trouble code number and post it here. Someone will advise the most cost effective solution. The CC and traction lights may have come on because the CEL is on.

It probably has something to do with the speed sensors.

I answered in more detail in another thread - but basically, the Subarus seem to be very sensitive to low oil pressure, and a dirty oil filter might be the only problem. Easy to buy a new one and find out!.

how do I know if the oil filter in Forester is dirty or not? Mine CEL turned on last week, and I changed the oil with new filter 5 months ago. I only put 80 miles/week on it.

I'm having the same issue - check engine light is on, cruise control is blinking, and vehicle dynamics control off is lit up. I drove through a large puddle this morning - totally caught off guard. Was in 4th when I went through it. The car basically revved when I was in it, switched to first to pull through it. There was an unpleasant smell (like when you peel out) even though I didn't hit the accelerator hard. Car sounds totally fine, so I'm hoping they'll turn off after it gets a chance to dry out.

Subaru dealer told me when your car's catalytic converter (emission system) needs attention the CEL will flash and disable the cruise and ABS. After a few deays the CEL will stop and all systems will return, but it will continue coming back on until the catalytic converter is fixed. He told me replacing the catalytic converters is $1,100. No way for an 09 forester with 76K miles on it. The guy at auto parts store recommended I try I dump in a bottle of emission and engine cleaner. Did so but CEL came back on. Oh well.

Read the codes before assuming your problem is a bad cat. Your auto parts guy should be able to read the trouble codes for free.

I bought a 2010 Forester a few months ago with 120K miles on it. The three lights, check engine, CC and traction control have been blinking for about a month. Based on this thread, I have lots of things to try to get it corrected BEFORE running to the repair shop. I don't buy used cars because I am rolling in money (LOL). The biggest problem is the power puff mechanic class I took in my 20's has no relevance to cars 50 years later. Love my Subaru and guess I will get my hands dirty trying to figure out what to do to correct the errors. Thank you all for all of the suggestions and for keeping this dialog going. It is a huge boon.

Same issue with my 2010 Forester check engine, traction light on, cruise flashing. Auto parts store says spark plugs and ignition coil are most likely due to the codes that came up. Pretty fed up with the junk that they pass off as this supposedly long lasting great car. The original tires and brakes were junk and had to be replaced very early in the life of the car, Then at 72000 miles or so the engine blew (rod right through the top of the engine) and I had to purchase a whole new engine (looked around the internet and found that was really that uncommon. So, there was between 5-6k out of my pocket. It seems that it is a stream of issues.

Same issue with my 2011 Forester check engine, traction light on, cruise flashing. Here is the definitive answer. Disconnecting the battery is just a temporary fix of the symptom and the lights will come back on when the On-Board Diagnostic System resets upon the completion of the engine cycle. I had my leak detection pump and fuel gas cap replaced (for about $750 at Firestone) and the problem is solved.

@redevitonj Let us know if this has resolved it for more than a few days. I'm having the same issue with the 2012 Subaru I just bought 4 days ago. Same exact lights came on 2 days into my ownership. Brought it in the next day and the mechanic cleared the codes and said it was just fine. Don't want to keep bringing it in until I have a solid suggestion.

I had my 2012 Forester regular service done 1 month ago and all 4 tired replaced 2 days ago. Today the check engine and traction control light are on and cruise control light is flashing...70,000 miles...$$$$??? Phone call to dealership tomorrow!

Turns out it was just my gas cap not being all the way sealed. The dealer replaced the gas cap and haven't had a problem for over a week.

This just happened to my car. 2011 Subaru Forrester. Looked here and saw most of the answers were about the gas cap. I tightened my gas cap and took it to that my local auto parts shop and had them reset the codes for me. Haven’t had a problem since!

So I brought my 2012 Forester into the dealership- apparently if the check engine light goes on the other 2 go on automatically. It was showing a major emissions leak. Ended up being my gas cap!!! If I had checked it it would have reset itself! Still had to pay for the service call. The technician said it could have been any numbers of things . Live and learn and check the gas cap first!!

I bought a 2015 Subaru forestar and the engine light comes on and off like every other two weeks. After is turned off seems to fix itself, I wonder what the problem it could be oil level is fine a bit in the lower side maybe a hell a quart. It’s driving me crazy.

So my Suburu at about 79,000 miles threw the cruise control blinking, check engine, and traction control lights all on at the same time. I ended up a the dealership and they suggested it was probably a faulty catalytic converter. My car was covered under warranty for a new one, so I got it. I had not seen the lights until the other day at 91,000 miles. Usually every time I start my car, the lights come back on. I have heard different places say everything from “you need a new battery” to “you need a new gas cap” Has anyone here tried a new gas cap, but it turned out to be something more major? I have no idea how to fix this obnoxious issue. Thanks!!!

Same behavior of Check engine light, cruise light flashing, traction control light on. Had Auto Zone pull the code for me and it came back that my 2010 Impreza was running to rich. It also exhibited a sort of dead spot when reved in park. The Auto Zone computer said "Mass airflow sensor" but also in much smaller text and less cost that it could be the air filter. Pulled my air filter in the parking lot and it was all plugged up with bugs, grass bits and ash from recent forest fires in the area. Replaced and awaiting to see if that completes the fix. After the filter replacement the dead spot when reved is gone, so I am confident the code will clear. At this point I am just deciding if I should take the battery terminal off to reset the codes.

It helps to get your car scanned if the check engine light is on. I had this happen on my 13 wrx, but I had a stage 1 tune. Scanned it and got B can com codes so I removed the tune and tuned it again. Car runs perfect. Check engine light will throw the cruise and traction light on at the same time.

My cruise control light came on blinking, check engine light as well, and traction control light. I have a 2014 Subaru crosstrek. My next oil change isn’t until towards the end of January. I was driving fine until 10 minutes in they all popped up. I did a code test and it popped up as p000A. I also just went to fill up gas at Costco and we got there turned off the car and when it was done filling up I started it and the first time it did not turn on. Tried it a second time, then the car turned on like normal. Any body have an idea/solution of what’s going on?

I have a 420 code (inefficient catalytic bank 1) and CEL light, Skid Light and Cruise are on/flashing. I cleared the inefficient cat and all problems solved. They will come back as they have the time after I replaced the battery and all lights went off I am certain. I am going to replace the cat with something from a wreckers if I can find one. My concern is the engine has 180,000 miles and I suspect the engine oil is getting at the catalytic.

This seems to happen alot in my crosstrek XV. I have seen different things turn the dash lights on. Once I ran over a pine cone. Went on vacation for 4 days, came back to it the 1st time I started the car. Last time I opened the gas cap and had to change pumps (so I moved the car without putting the cap on). Always the same lights: check engine, traction control and flashing cruise control. They usually shut off with in 24 hrs.

I tried the gas cap trick several months ago and it did work. However, last night the lights came back on driving down the highway. I bought another gas cap and it didn't resolve the issue yet. I'm going to give it a few days to see what happens.

I have the same problem. Now I have a passenger front and rear parking light, only the one side, not the other. Plus the left rear parking light does not work. BUT, when I signal to the left, the light works. It is not a bulb issue, I checked all of the fuzzes. I checked the codes, it's a 420 as well for the catalytic converter. Fear I am going to get a huge diagnostic bill and no fix if I go to the dealer with this many problems.

Same problem with my 2011 Forester at about 82000 miles, took it to dealership twice and they couldn't find the problem, suggested replacing the mass air flow sensor at $430, decided to take it to my mechanic instead, he replaced the evap purge valve at $137 and all the lights came on after 3 days. I think it may be a poltergeist, so I am having an exorcism performed this week. I will keep you all posted!

Exorcism sounds appropriate. Honestly, the fuel cap trick for $12.00 worked for me. I changed the gas cap, unplugged battery for 5 minutes and it's been a month since the ghost has visited me. Well, for now anyhow.

I have the same issue with my 2014 Forester. It started around 70,000 miles and it has been going on and off for about 10,000 miles. Checked the code and it said Mass Airflow Sensor. Had the oil changed and filter replaced for it to go away for a while then came back again...So really I have no clue what is wrong with this.

Had similar problem about 2.5 years ago, 2015 forester. Tried gas cap which worked but CEL would come back on. Turned out it was a bad battery which ticked me off bc my warrantee has just expired at 60k; around that time, my battery died on a dreadfully cold day and the AAA guy said it was bc Subaru batteries from 2013-15 ish sucked, a lot of issues. CEL just came on again today so we’ll see...

If the us a failed when the diagnosis are run on the Subaru, these three light will always illuminate. Subaru does this my people get the car looked over which is a good thing in some cases. We all had a check engine light Illuminate and ignored so they create additional issue to force people to get their vehicle looked at. There is not on set issue when you see this; you must hook an ODB reader to the car and determine the problem. As a reminder, the computer in these vehicles glitch from time to time. Pull the code reset the system and if the same code comes back you troubleshoot the issue from there.

I've had a 2010 Forester for several years and the 3 lights coming on is a common problem. Seems to happen right after filling the gas tank. I bought an OBD reader that can clear the codes, for $25 at Wally's. I loosen and re-tighten the gas cap, clear the codes.ADVICE- when you fill the tank don't try to top it off. I've replaced the gas cap once for $20, just in case the seal was bad..

I read a post on another page that someone’s check engine light comes on and cruise control begins flashing every when they get gas from a lower quality station. It seemed like a silly solution, but I started taking note of when this same problem was happening to me. They were right! So far Costco, circle k gas both make those 2 lights come on. BP seems to be fine. Interested if this is a solution for anyone else?

Okay don't usually post on these forums , but I use some information and it helps , 2009 forester , I work as a maintenance and up keep for some farms ,so constantly I am dealing with equipment upkeep and issues . My car is kept in top shape , this situation happened to me , just changed oil , found inner tie rod with minor , minor leak but went through everything . But stopped to get gas at full service 5 cents a litre cheaper , why not ? place got crazy busy the guy , started doing propane I wanted to get out of there need3ed my receipt , somehow the gas cap didn't get on . this cel came on 200 kilometers later , I checked it it said catalytic converter , I called BS. I reset codes it came back , was wondering now where to go when I needed gas again and saw missing cap , aaaa , ordered a new cap , live in the middle of no where still waiting for it , but came to this site , totally makes sense, and kinda figured this was it , I had a buick park avenue years ago if cap was off she ran like hell. hopefully cap will be here Monday . but do not replace your catalytic converter as I have been tricked on this one before as this seems to be a go to when cel come on.

I no longer have my Subaru however months before trading it in for transmission issue I that same sequence of lights came on again. I noticed that when those lights came on I had the cruise control on. So I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and reconnected. I was back to normal. I tried an experiment. I never used my cruise control again and the lights never returned. So I am now believing that it is the cruise control that is causing this issue. I traded it in so I really never found out if that was the cause.

This was a very interesting and useful forum. I read through all of them. My 2010 Subaru Forester has over 96,000 miles and has never had any problems. Today I got the solidly illuminated check engine and traction control lights, with the blinking cruise control light. I had noticed that the car didn't sound right when I started it up the last couple of days either. So after reading the posts I did the obvious thing and check the gas cap but that seemed to be OK. Then I decided to look at the battery since that was also mentioned as a possible cause and sure enough my Positive terminal and clamp was heavily corroded. I am talking corrosion which was visible on and under the clamp and against the battery terminal. I cleaned everything up and now no warning lights. I realize that I will need to drive the car a few days or weeks to be sure that was the cause but I am thinking it was. I will update the post again to note what happens. Thanks to everyone who has posted over the years and months.

Could be a number of issues, most of which are not serious unless ignored. Get the codes and talk to your auto parts store. My codes indicated a misfire on Cyl#1. this was solved with new plugs and wires. Not sure the wires needed replacing, but its cheap insurance. The #1 cylinder plug showed excessive wear (Twice the gap on the other three plugs). An internet search indicated that the plug wear is due to running the engine under load at low RPM - not sure I agree with this, but the lights are off and the car has much more pep.

Just to update my previous post which is two posts above this one. My 2010 Subaru Forester has over 96,000 miles and has never had any problems. A few days ago I got the solidly illuminated check engine and traction control lights, with the blinking cruise control light. So after reading the posts I did the obvious thing and check the gas cap but that seemed to be OK. Then I decided to look at the battery since that was also mentioned as a possible cause and cleaned everything up as there was corrosion on the Positive terminal. I realize that by disconnecting the battery it would clear the warning lights. I drove the car about 20 minutes and the lights came back on. I was near an Autozone so I took the car over and had them run the Check Engine codes. It came back as Code P0171 and the printout from Autozone said "ASE certified Master Techanicians have seen this issue on your type of vehicle and the most likely solution is: Replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor." The printout also said "Code P0171 indicates bank 1 System is too lean for a predetermined period of time". Also, "P0171 System too lean (Bank 1, Bank 2 & Bank 3". What the Autozone employees suggested was to run a bottle of engine cleaner through the engine and see if that didn't clean things up. I bought a bottle of Sea Foam brand cleaner and did that. After about half a tank of gas the codes cleared themselves and have not come back on in over 300 miles. My next step would have been to buy some MAF Sensor cleaner and clean the MAF Sensor. If any problems come back in the future I will post them as an update but I do believe this has corrected the problem.

I currently have a 2017 Subaru Impreza that's been experiencing oil consumption and other performance issues, so I've decided to turn it in early (lease) and take over a family member's 2009 Forester. Car sat for 2-3 years, so we had it serviced at dealership near family member's house and then had it shipped here, arriving last week. Drove fine until yesterday, and then got a horrible clattering sound and rough idle on start up when cold. Last night the clatter went away, but had rough idle plus the lights everyone is discussing in this forum. Started the car today, rough idle, lights, and then the car stalled. Restarted it, rough idle, and lights. Car is now being towed to dealership. And now I have two Subaru's with mechanical issues.....

My wife drove her car this morning and had to turn around to get my car in the garage. The check engine light was on, cruise control light was blinking, and the traction control light was on. Took it to Firestone and they diagnosed there was an air gap. The mechanics took off and reseated the air cleaner assembly (air filter box). Once this was done, the check engine light, traction control light, and cruise control light went off. I asked them about the air gap issue. Because the outback is 11 years old (2008 outback), the air filter box is getting harder to close and this can cause the air gap. The mechanic told me to ensure the air filter box is closed tightly and to warn others working on the car about this issue if they check the quality of the air filter. Firestone did not charge me for this work, since I take my cars to them for maintenance.

I have a 2011 forester. I bought used in 2014. It had just over 36,000 miles on it. Almost from day 1 it burned oil. In 2016 my lights came on. I read about the fixes that everyone tall about. It turns out oil was getting past the piston rings and getting into my exhaust. I have the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine. No turbo. It was getting into my catalytic converter and clogging it up. Messed up my o2 sensors, burned up my converter, made pistons 1 and 3 misfire, burned out one of my valves, and my engine faile while I was driving on the highway. My exhaust manifold and converter were glowing orange. Engine was toast. Got a rebuilt engine. $5,000. Everything is good. That was a little over a year ago. My damn lights came on two days ago. Get it checked out by a mechanic. Someone who knows Subarus. I love my Forester but, it seems that these engines are shit! After this happened the first time I read a lot of stories just like mine. Especially in model years 2010 to 2015. Subaru knows this happens. And they all consume and inordinate amount of oil. That is probably why all the new ones have totally different engine.

The free/cheap fixes: 1) Check that your fuel/gas cap is fully tightened. 2) Check/clean (replace if necessary) your air filter. 3) Disconnect battery for 5 minutes, then reconnect. (Note: This will likely impact your idle settings and the car will run rough until it is reset, including the car stalling when braking. VERY DANGEROUS at roundabouts and Give Way signs). 4) Run some engine cleaner through your engine. 5) Drain engine oil and replace oil filter. More expensive option (only if above options fail): 6) Replace catalytic converter.

I had mine checked out after all these lights were on and discovered that cylinders 1 and 4 were misfiring. This was checked at the Advance Auto Parts store. I took it to a mechanic and had the plugs and plug wires replaced. Problem fixed. Runs like new. $140. (He also checked a possible oil leak, fixed a flat tire that came off the rim, and checked the coil pack). Mine is a 2010 Forester Premium.

Hi All Subaru Owners, It is amazing that this issue which was posted here 7 years ago (2013) is still relevant. I want to share my story, as a courtesy to all others before me who shared their experience and knowledge. I had the same symptoms (Check Engine + Traction Control + Brake = Yellow lamp is ON, Cruise Control = Flashing). I have Subaru Legacy 2.0 Liter, Model 2012, 100K miles (160K km). In Israel they call it Subaru B4. In my case, the warning lights started just after full fulling the tank. All the simple do-it-yourself (fuel tank cover, air filter gap,...) did not shut down the warning light and re-activated the cruise control. After reading all the posts above, I have decided to simply ignore this unexplained phenomena and not visit a local Subaru workshop. I notice the car is performing as usual. So I went to my car electrician and ask him to scan the codes, just out of curiosity. The code was P0140, which is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for "O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1, Sensor 2)" This O2 sensor is mentioned a lot in previous posts. I asked my car electrician to clear the warnings light using his code scanner. He just did that. 10 minutes later, I performed the emission test in a near by government certified examination institute. The car passed the test successfully. I will keep follow this. Maybe the problem will re-appear. My suggestion to all others with the same problem - do not panic, and do not begin expensive parts replacement. Take the time, clear the lights with a code scanner (best) or by disconnecting the battery (second best, as it may also erase your radio stations and hands-free settings). "Listen" to your car. Try to estimate if you feel something is not as usual. If you can, wait for your yearly maintenance, or the mandatory yearly emission and brakes examination. Go see a Subaru workshop ONLY after you are more than certain that the car is not as usual, and check you bank account balance before :) . Drive safely. Harel Israel

Exact same issue with 2012 Forester. A mechanic suggested running three full tanks of high octane gas, from a from a quality gas brand. It might help to clean things out. Probably the same as adding a gas additive. I have my doubts, but trying it now. Thanks for all the info.

Thanks to this forum I was able to avoid being stranded. Here is my situation. My father's 2010 forrester is 10 years old. It has 60,000 miles on it. It barely ran. All the lights were on. I took it to my mechanic. He cleared the codes and drove it for the weekend. No problems. I then took it out for a drive. Ran perfectly but after about 3 miles it is barely operable. I drive it down I95 for a while and it is chugging along, suddenly shifts, drives fine, then all lights are on and flashing check engine light and it's struggling. I limp it into the parking lot at home depot, buy a pair of piers, disconnect and reconnect the battery and it runs beautifully. The coil, wires and sparks have been replaced. Oil is clean. It appears that the problem returns when the drive cycle completes. When it resets the car is barely driveable. My father is 93 and I need this car to last for 2 more years, about 4000 miles. Any ideas?

I have a 2007 Forrester. The Cruise/Check Engine has been going off since 2014. The dealership has "fixed" it many times only for it to come back. This week 4/2021 the light went off again and they said "we found the problem and can fix it for $1700" - - we will most likely trade it in but now, knowing the issue cannot be fixed they will only give us $1000 for a trade in. I call BS! We are now into 4-5 figures for repairs and this is our second Subaru...and that is all they can offer us? We are taking the car to a local repiar shop to see if they can fix it...we are beyond frustrated with this issue!!!

Hello guys... 2011 Forester 2.5x here and i had the same issue.. was driving on my way home and the CEL came on along with the Traction Control and blinking Cruise light.. just bought the car 2 days ago with 139K on it and there I go saying "here we go...".. got home and searched to find answers and found this blog.. so, I checked my gas cap to make sure it was tight.. usually when you put the gas cap back on you have to make it click once or twice to ensure tightness.. but since this was my first subie, i don't know if thats the case.. anyways, i made sure the gas cap was tight.. then disconnected the battery for about 5-7 minutes.. started the car and let it run for about a minute or so and the errors went away.. we'll see if it comes back on again.

Many thanks to all the previous authors. We own a 2012 Subaru Forester, same symptoms, Hard TC and CE lamp, flashing Cruise Control. Started right at 152,000 miles. This one we bought new and had 2 short blocks and a long block replaced, by the dealership, due to OIL consumption failures. Engines failed twice. so basically only about 70,000 miles on its 4th Engine. Thought I might have damaged the RR wheel speed sensor as I had to pull the hub and press the bearing and backing plate out. May try replacing that as well. My older son Garrett was into all things automotive so we had bought a scan tablet, MAxicom. scan said o2 sensors bad. Replaced both upstream and down stream reset codes, filled the tank with HiTest and hoped all was good. No such luck. I will be running the sea foam for 300 miles after I replace the original gas cap. Before the Upstream O2 replacement, car was stalling at start and and idle was rough. output voltage of the sensor was a square wave. good voltage, then 0 volts and back, engine was unable to run smooth. Now running steady and strong but had the lights on before disconnecting and cleaning the positive terminal this afternoon. WE will see what transpires...

BIG THANK YOU to all the insight!! 2012 impreza, got the CEL (emission), hard stability control off and flashing cruise control. about sh*t my pants like awwwww fk here comes a big repair bill. Lone and behold, it was just a loose gas cap, as so many mentioned previously. THANK YOU AGAIN! One thing to add, make sure you are patient as the warning lights may not turn off right away once gas cap is installed securely. Unless you opt for the hard reset by pulling the neg terminal on the battery. I drove about 150km between 2/3 days before it turned off, approximately 8 car starts, as reference for the length before the computer re-diagnoses all is clear and removes the errors.

Found this form this morning due to those 3 exact lights (Traction control, check engine and blinking cruise control light) came on on my way to work once I got on the highway. Still drives normal, no other issues leading up to these lights coming on. I've had my 2012 Subaru Forester since 2018. Came w 66,000 miles on it, bought from a private owner, and is now at approx 112,000 miles paid off. Great vehicle, second subaru. Replaced timing belt and recently changed oil and oil filter. Made a "just in case" appnt at Subaru shop to run diagnosis this Thursday if my brother and I can't fix it by then. Thankfully, you all have provided great feedback on things to try BEFORE taking it in to any shop and possibly paying a non-sensical amount of money. Will try these after work and hopefully they'll take care of the problem!

I cleaned the corroded battery terminals and the lights(Traction control, check engine and blinking cruise control light) turned off.

Man you guys rock! Bought a 2010 Forester from my wife's friend who was ready to upgrade and who's dad was the first owner of the vehicle. Thought it'd be a nice car for my daughter who's in the middle of getting her license. Had it 3 months no issues. Then all of a sudden yesterday the engine light came on. This morning, going to work with it, I noticed what everyone here is talking about: Traction light on, cruise blinking, engine light on. I get on here and find this post and start seeing the talks of the gas cap. Go outside, pop the gas door open, undo the cap, screw it back on, listened to it a click a few times go start the car and ALL LIGHT ARE GONE! Thank everyone chiming in on this bout the gas cap!

Doug Same problem with my 2011 forester, A mechanic told me 3 or 4 years ago I need a new converter to fix the prob. I ignored it and the lights went off. When they come on I put some premium gas in with no Shitanol (Ethanol) in it and the lights go off. I switch back to reg gas until they come on again. On long trips I use Premium gas so I can use my cruse. I bought the Forester used from a Sub dealer with a new engine. Wrong piston rings on old engine, same with new one. I add a quart a month & change the filter twice a year, oil changes are not necessary. I did have the gas cap replaced 2 years ago, maybe it helped I was just going to replace the converter before checking out this site but why bother.
