An excess of two quarts in the crankcase is potentially dangerous for the engine. I'm guessing you checked the oil just after you shut off the engine. At that time, there's still oil in the top of the engine that has to have time to drain down before you check the oil level, and two quarts is about it. Pull the drain plug and drain all the oil. Then replace the proper amount.
