2003 Intrepid transmission/sensor heating question

Asked by ed6910 Apr 08, 2012 at 02:16 PM about the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7 motor.  The transmission runs/shifts fine until it reaches normanl operating temp, 222 according to the computer. Then it drops into low range/limp back mode and will not shift past second gear.  Ironically as soon as I stop driving it dropping the temp below normal operating temp it drives/shifts fine again.  The codes are p0871 and p1776.  Is this a cooling problem or a transmission problem.

1776 has to do with the manual shift valve not being fully engaged. its easily fixed by replacing the shift cable that goes from your hand shifter into the transmission. 871 is an overdrive circuit fault.
