No crank no start without a jack

Asked by Guru1NMQN Sep 15, 2019 at 08:14 AM about the 1989 Chevrolet C/K 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Here's one for the books. I turn the key to my 1989
chevy C1500 4.3L 6 cyl standard and i get a
clicking noise. Sounds like the starter or battery,
right? Totally wrong. Bought a mew battery, starter,
ignition switch, neiutral safety switch, oil pressure
sensor/switch, distributor cap and rotor, but to no
avail.. AND HERE'S THE KICKER: Throughout this
whole process, if i jack the passenger side front
wheel up off the ground 8 inches or more the truck
will start right up with no hesitation at all. Can
amybody help? That jack (low profile 3 ton) is
getting to be too much for a 61 year old.

After looking for possibilities. I replaced the steering column. The truck started without the need of the jack, but the third time, while the key was in the start position, smoke started to come from the column, which has still left me guessing because i cannot find a wiring diagram that will clearly show the path of current when i turn the key to tje start position. I am at wits end can anybody help before i start rewiring the whole truck. Can't let it go. I sunk 4K in it over the summer.
