Van not starting and key not locking or unlocking

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello all. Any ideas on my situation would be appreciated. First my key (fob)
would not open my 04 Caravan. So when I 'manually' entered, it started right
away, but died after a few seconds. I repeated this several times until it
seemed to just lock out, as in not turn over. I still have dash power like radio,
fan etc. I already tried removing the IOD fuse and disconnecting the battery
to reset the BCM. No luck ! Any thoughts ? Thanks....

Sounds like a problem in the security system, do you have access to a scanner? That would be the easiest way to repair.

Try unlocking the rear (hatch) door with the key then starting it. I have to do this in mine because the device in the drivers door is bad and sets off the alarm everytime I use the key to unlock it and my fob doesn't work for some reason. Any way a stranger in a parking lot one day told me to do this as it bypasses the security system for some reason. It worked!

Try this, disconnect the battery then touch the cables together in order to discharge the capacitors and transistors. Try to enter and start without using the fob, If that works try it with the fob, you can always get it running again, right? Take care

Thanks Mike, I already got it going by doing something similar to your suggestion. I disconnected the positive battery terminal and pulled the IOD fuse for about an hour or so. Re-installed everything and my van started and the power locks are working again. I guess the question now is, what caused this and how can I prevent it from happening again ? Any idea's fellow CarGuru's ? Thanks again...... Dan

Thanks Mike , joining the battery cables together (over-night) worked great ! I guess this is called a 'hard reset' ? I tried restarting it several times today and it still works. Questions is: what caused this and will it happen again if I don't get a part replaced, possibly the BCM ? Dan

You've heard the term glitch? You may never see it again, When the computer systems first came out UFOs were popular so we used to blame this kind of thing on aliens. Take care, watch out for UFOs

Thanks Mike ! I appreciate all the help. BTW, maybe that's what made the UFO's crash, a computer 'glitch' ? :) Dan
