All depends on if you kept on running it. Why do you think the oil pump is bad? Did you check oil pressure with a mechanical gage?

What is the oil pressure with a mechanical gage? Does the motor make internal noise, like knocking? Does the motor burn oil? Does the motor overheat? How does it run, with a miss? YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOURSELF WHAT THAT OIL PRESSURE IS...

I would definitely get a second opinion ... Getting a different mechanic is definitely cheaper then getting a new engine. What tests did he do? Does the motor run ,,, Have compression, smoke ... knock. The best description of an oil starved engine is "Two skeletons making love on a tin roof" Normally the rods knock and give plenty of advance warning. Based on a cost that could run into thousand$ Get a second opinion. If you have towing on your policy .. most tows are covered to a repair shop from your home Good Luck
