What would cause a car to die when turning?

Sometimes the car is dead when trying to start it, after 2 or 3 times it starts
right off.  Sometimes without warning it will die while driving or turning, but
after putting it in park it starts right up  1991 crystal new yorker

The power steering pump or pulley might be putting resistance to your belts causing the engine to work harder and stall.
