Hi.I own a 1979 CJ7 with the 249 inline 6cyl engine. Can someone explain a long nagging question I have. Why do the CJ7's and Wranglers get such lousy gas mileage?.

well, they are rolling boxes, not exactly aerodynamic. and several things play into fuel economy. what transmission do you have and does it suit your driving? highway driving or city. also you could have a dirty fuel system. try a new air filter, clean fuel injectors, and see if that helps. i have a friend who has a 93 yj and his dad has an 06 tj. both have 4.0l i6 the 93 has a 3 speed auto, and got about 11mpg with a 4inch lift. clean injectors and new air filter. it now gets around 15. he does quite alot of city driving. the 06 has a 6 speed manual and gets high teens to low 20s.
