'09 Pontiac Vibe repair issues?

Asked by Jun 20, 2017 at 12:17 PM about the 2009 Pontiac Vibe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 09 Pontiac Vibe with over 185,000 miles on it. I've maintained it
well and had very little problems with it. Of course, when I paid it off, now
I'm having a TON of issues. My ABS is out, I'm having battery problems
and now that the battery has gone completely dead, it's idling around 400
RPMs and dying on me routinely. I love this little car. It's been so good but
it's really raggeldy now and I cannot afford all the fixes. Over $1000 to fix
the ABS alone?? Any ideas for me?

Why $1k to fix the ABS? Its likely just a sensor or the rear wiring harness that needs replacing. Have you had a tune up on it? Is the engine light on since its running poorly? What do you mean by dying on you routinely? Does it stall out ? No restart?

I wish I could remember offhand the reason behind the $1K estimate on the ABS. I have a BUNCH of lights on the dash for the ABS and traction issues. When it's wet, caution when braking IS a must!! I have had no tune ups, no. It dies every time I stop at a light or stop sign. The idle drops to 400 RPM. If I put it into Neutral or Park, it'll go back up to close to 1000 RPMs. It so far always restarts. The battery will be replaced tomorrow. I just need to get the rest of it running right again. I love this car! My husband calls it my skateboard.

The rear wiring harness is causing your ABS/Traction control issue. The harness is around $38.00 I own a 2009 Pontiac G8, every time I took it through the car wash, my ABS/Traction control light would appear. I changed the rear harness and it took care of that. If your husband picks up a cheap scan tool, I could read the codes and diagnose the problem. I'm think you have either a bad spark plug wire, bad plug or bad coil pack. Could be all of the above. The scan would likely come up as a misfire on a the bank where the problem is. I would give it a tune up , have you husband buy some throttle body cleaner and clean the throttle body with the cleaner and a tooth brush. Clean up the MAP sensor as well that will be part of why it stalling I hope this helps Eric

Cheryl, I just thought I would add this information, After you install the new battery tomorrow let us know how it runs. Just be sure all the connections are clean and tight once the old battery is removed. If the battery is nearing the end of it life I would replace it together with the alternator if it were me. It has been dealing with unusual voltage spikes and drops. The voltage regulator could also very well be the culprit. If it is bad it will cause voltage drops and spikes all over the landscape. The computer needs "clean" voltage to work correctly together with the sensors. I hope this will help also! Eric
