why is fuel running from top of gas tank?

Asked by Cedric_3496 Mar 27, 2017 at 09:24 PM about the 1982 Porsche 928

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I starting a 1982 928 that's been sitting for a few years without the gas tank and
strainer connected, I bypassed the fuel tank and connected the pump to a gas
can and when the car started it ran for about a minute before fuel started
pouring from the top of the gas tank. The fuel smells old but I believe the tank is
empty. What is happening?
