09 Toyota Camry (standard) car won’t start unless pop started
Drove my car home from work the other night and
turned it off then went to start it again and it
wouldn’t start. Battery isn’t the issue. Engine won’t
even turn over, my lights turn on and all but it won’t
crank over. We got it to pop start and drove it about
30 miles and my car started to lose power. My
lights shut off my radio shut off and car started
dying while driving it. We checked the terminals and
they were tight so that’s not the problem either. Any
suggestions are much appreciated!!
this sounds like no charge from the alternator to the battery. was the battery still charged fully when you got home? what does pop start mean? Jump started or clutch vehicle push start?
The car is manual so we were able to push it and pop start it. The battery was still charged when we got it back home. It’s been sitting in our yard since this happened 2 months ago and the battery did die just sitting in the yard after awhile but it still won’t starts. We tested the started which was BRAND NEW! It’s only like 3 maybe 4 months old. We did replace the starter solenoid but that didn’t make a difference either. Still having no luck getting it to start
Did you replace the starter relay? If its not cranking that's where I would go next. If not the relay then its could be the ignition module. As far as the battery going dead in two months. I would suspect a parasitic draw . Meaning something is drawing down the battery that shouldn't be.You can check for this with a simple test light inline with the charging system. Just connect one end of the test light to a removed battery cable and the other end to the post where the cable was removed. The light should come on as the radio is drawing power as it should. If the door is open the light will be on as the interior dome light is on. You will need to pull the radio fuse and dome light fuse. Now the light on the test light should go out. If it doesn't as I suspect, then remove one fuse at a time ( replacing it if the light on the test light does not go out ) until you find the fuse that effects the test light. When you find that fuse see what it operates. Brake light fuse ? Fiscally check the brake lights, bulbs and sockets for a shorted light or socket.Other fuse check that circuit , what ever it is for a short. broken wire, bad ground, positive wire touching ground and so on. .
another thought the starter gets its ground from the engine . The engine gets its ground directly from the negative post of the battery. Make sure you have a good ground from the battery to the engine. This could prevent the starter from engaging as well. Even a loose connection to the battery or low charged battery could cause this.
