First thought; you say that the starter whines. Does it seem to run faster/louder than normal? If so, you likely have a broken timing belt; your car is notorious for this..... Otherwise, go to a car parts store and borrow an OBD code reader. Find the codes and address those problems. There are so many things that can cause an engine not to start that you could be guessing for months before you actually find it. If you're not confident in your diagnostic skills, do what most people do: tow the car to a mechanic and have it fixed properly.
