I bought a civic si coupe with auto transmission the guy said it was a '98 is this possible?

No not possible. Not the coupe, sedan nor hatchback offered an automatic in 1998, 5 speed manual only... but the coupe only came in Trims CX, DX, HX, LX, EX http://www.edmunds.com/honda/civic/1998/?zip=91316&ps=used&sub=coupe

In 1999 the Si Trim was introduced, but still no automatic for coupe or si or hatchback. Only the VP 4-door Sedan offered a 4 speed automatic Have you VIN handy? Let me check it
