My 2002 Cadillac Deville will not go forward or backward

I have a 2002 Cadillac Deville and when you get in
it and start it, it fires right up like nothing is wrong  
but when I pull it in gear (Drive or reverse) it will not
go neither way. Some people think it's the axle and
some think it's the tranamission. What do you all
think? Please let me know and thank you!
