Transmission Fluid

Asked by Jan 12, 2018 at 08:37 PM about the 2005 Cadillac CTS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A “25% transmission fluid” like came on in my car
tonight. I am going to take it in tomorrow. Do I need
to get a transmission fluid change or do I need to
have them just re fill it?

Change it. If your car only had one quarter of the fluid it would not move.

Do you know how much it would cost, ball park. when I look online it says anywhere from 80-250. I just want to make sure that I don’t get ripped off. It does have a sealed transmission... I don’t know if that would make a difference

Shop around if you are concerned. Make sure they use the exact correct fluid as specified in your owners manual. Don't accept the one size fits all fluids that the oil change shops push. The cost to change the fluid is pennies compared to the cost of a new transmission. I would say that $80 is probably low for full synthetic fluid and a filter.

Great, thanks so much!

Around $150-200

Does it matter if it is a sealed transmission?

Sealed means that the manufacturer doesn't recommend changing it so that it fails and you buy another car. It's always a good idea to have the fluid changed. Find a reputable local transmission shop or trusted mechanic in your area to help, not a chain garage.

If I can’t get it in tomorrow is it still ok to drive until I can get it in Monday?

As long as you are not driving cross country.

Probably just a 2-3 mike radius not going over 40
