Temperature gauge fluctuates between normal and hot while driving what could be or is the problem. Its a 2002 ford explorer 4.0L
If it does it slowly like every 5 minutes, u have a sticky thermostat, if it's doing it within seconds, u have a bad sensor or shorted sensor wire
Are you loosing coolant but don't see any drips on the ground? White smoke out the exhaust when you first start it? Does the cooling system build pressure really fast? All are symptoms of a blown headgasket. Ford 4.0s are known for this. Other things are a restricted flow in the radiator, air in the cooling system, thermostat as irod mentioned, water pump impeller deterioration, radiator hoses collapsing.
Water pump is going out thanks for the feed back
