There's no engine code in the VIN. Emission control standards went into effect beginning with the 1968 model year in all 50 States, 1966 in California. Many States have chosen to exempt vehicles from Emissions Inspection that are over a certain age due to the cost of maintaining the equipment needed for the inspections. It's not cost effective because there are so few of these vehicles on the road. For example New Jersey exempts vehicles 1995 and older from inspection. Emissions standards are still there for these vehicles but the State chooses to no longer inspect them. So check with your State DMV if you're not sure. The available engines for your LTD were the V8 351, V8 390, and the V8 429. Look at the lower right side of the driver's doorjamb for a sticker. It will tell you what engine, transmission, etc. the vehicle was originally equipped with. Hope that helps! Jim
