Go to 442.com. Go to the FAQ area and many questions will be answered. Apparently W29 was a code for 442's for the appearance and performance package, but after 1971 they lost much of their individuality and were furnished with 350's as standard. I know the 455 was offered from '72 till I believe '75, but you would have to do a lot more research. Hope this helps.

I'll check one the 75/W-29/455. doubtful one really exisited, the 455 was discontunied after 1971 because of the gas crunch, and in 1971 the end of that year. The 442 ended from being a seperate model. 1971 is the last of the true 442's after 1971 the 442 was a High Pro Cutlass.

Uhh.. chip is wrong. 455 and the 442 option were offered for the '75's. The oil embargo of 1973 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis) caused many auto companies to think differently.. but the 455 was still an option... and yes, it is still a true 442. - D

Yeah sounds right to me. In '76 the 455 was still available(L-72). The 442 option was available on the Cutlass S 2-door coupe. It came with some option specific parts. If the 455 was ordered in the 442 that year was it a W-29? I dont know, maybe. To my knowlege Olds.discontinued the dual exaust option in '75, along with the "Rocket" designation on the air cleaner assy. decal. I have seen pictures of both years with the Rocket decals, however the disign of the "lid" for the air cleaner changed in '75 due to the HEI, along with the shape of the decal. so was the same engine configuration installed in a '76 and W-29(on the option sheet)? Recently i saw a '76 442 for sale on the internet. The owner supplied a video of the car. it is black/gold with a red interior. It has W-29 metal badging on the fenders. One thing the owner didn't show/provide was a clear picture of the vehicle trim tag. On there it would say what color(s)/interior trim the car was delivered with and possible any special trim options. I thought it was strange to see a black 442 with a red interior, most of the black ones i've seen have black interiors, its possible I suppose. I think Olds. installed about 1,500 455 engines in all the Cutlass series combined. So if someone had a one of a very few special oredered 442's in '76 they may want to do a little more research before offering it for sale.
