442 oil capacity

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently purchased a 1969 Olds 442.  Changed oil and filter for the first time.  Now have 6 quarts in the engine and dip stick still shows it OVER a quart low. I do not think engine is original  to the car.  It has a casting number 390925E which I am told is rare but I have not found out why.   Visual inspection of the oil pan, it does not appear to be  anything out of the ordinary.  All the info available says capacity should be 5 quarts except Toranado which takes six.  Can you help with this delema?

someone couldve easily changed the dipstick and most aftermarket dipsticks aren't 100% accurate.

casting number 390925E IS very rare according to Olds FAQ -- Blocks - 442.com www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofblk.htm But I waited and waited and the site would not load, so couldn't find out why

One site did load and said it takes 7.5 quarts for a 1968..don't know if that would be different from '69.but I am not suggesting you add that much..if overfull and the crankshaft dips in to the oil it will whip it in to foam and that is obviously not good
