Did Oldsmobile make an automatic 1968 442?

from what I can remember (I was a kid) will say YES they did. Wasn't a goofy reverse as the last selection either (like a jet-a-way) but a hydramatic, I believe. My uncle barry, the lawyer had one-....wait might have been a cutlass...:(

Hi Bob, Will you ask your Uncle if it was a 442 or if it 's a Cutless? I was sure we'd purchased a 442 but now we are getting conflicting information stating Oldsmobile didn't make an automatic 442. As we are getting ready to sell the car with it's new paint job we don't want to deceive the new buyer.

If you're set to smoke those tires, you may want a special tranny that can take a bit of abuse anyways, so I'd shop for a real toughie to do my bidding-

I would say no. The numbers 442 stood for a 4 barrel carb, a 4 speed manual transmission and a 2 (dual) exhaust. -- My friends uncle ordered a Vista Cruiser wagon like that the year before the 442 came out.

yes the T400 was an option on the 442. this kinda kills the 442 name, but thats how it is

Yes they did, I owned one. It had a350ci.eng red, with white top, black leather bucket seats and auto trans on console. Sure wish I still had that car.or the one I traded it for, a1970 w30 442, 455ci.with the Hurst duel shifter,duel high rise volley carbs, silver gray,with black stripes on trunk, and hood.

Yes, I had one. 400ci 400 trans . I worked for olds and cad. In 67 to 80.

I have a 1968 Olds 442 automatic trans. I thought I had blown the tranny racing and my husband refused to fix it until "I started driving like the Granny I am". Couldn't do it so he wouldn't fix it for 10 years. When I told him I was going to find another mechanic he finally fixed it, finding it only needed a $60.00 part and not a rebuild after all.In 68 they built it as a stand alone and also in 1969. In 1970 it went back to being a Cutless option. They had to change what the 442 stood for with the automatic. It then became 400, 4 barrel, duel exhaust.

Thank you to everyone that answered my question especially the most recent one. Mine will be ready to go as soon as I put in a new Carburator and adjust the position of the ignition as it's a little off.

I have owned a 1967 442 with automatic trans and a 1968 Hurst Olds with automatic trans. These were extremely legitimate cars and had documentation. I don't believe the 68 Hurst Olds was made from 442s as it had a 455 engine. I see on the net they claim the 442 stood for 4bbl / 4-speed/ and dual exhaust. Memory tells me that it was 4=400 cubic inches/4=4 bbl/ and 2 = dual exhaust. Who is correct? Me, or Google? ;)

442 stood for 4 barrel, 4 speed, 2 dual exhaust.....anything else was not he 442....no matter what anyone else says, this is the case...
