Lincoln mark iv won’t shut off

Asked by Mar 06, 2019 at 02:41 PM about the 1973 Lincoln Continental

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Shut it off and hear a click and when I start it again the key feels loose and
she won’t shut off. Everything has power radio windows and the engine was
running with key out.

Most common on these were the ignition switch itself, then the ignition keys rack and pinion drive. Hopefully it just the switch as that is much easier to get to that the rack and pinion inside the steering column.

It was a pin inside the calumn that sheared off at the poing where the key cylinder pushs the rod down the column

That's weird, usually those don't shear unless there is too much load on the rod, are you sure the switch is good and not binding up internally.
