You haven't tried the key in the trunk? I don't get it. If it does not work get a new lock for the trunk, and have it keyed by a lock smith, the same as the lock cylinder for your ignition.

I have a key that unlocks the trunk. It fits but won't turn in the ignition. Should both locks use the same key?

Maybe your key is worn. I used to own a 86 XJS and I think there was a valet key which operated the ignition but not the trunk and then the regular key that operated everything. There was no key that only opened the trunk.

I don't know. I only have one Key for my (recently purchased used) 1996 XJS and it starts the car and opens the trunk.

In my 1984 XJ6 one key opens the door locks, a second key starts the ignition. No other way.
