door latch retaining clip

the rod from the outside door handle is disconnected from the door latch retaining clip. the old one still in place . does this mean that I need to replace door latch  retaining clip.

It would be better if you did replace, but look at the old clip, see if it is broke, (I assuming it is metal) if not they stretch and sometimes you can bend them a bit to hold. If plastic, replace it.
