what would cause a carbutarer to smell like gas

gasoline in the carb makes it smell like gas...

maybe a bad choke pull of,flooding the carb.

Most of the time old cars do. Start the car lift bonnet and have a look.

its completly normal isnt the smell of old cars great possable small gasket leak but the smell aint going no where not getting flooded that bad if its still running.. your good enjoy it

Could be a rich mixture, leaking gasket or float level too high. Is it hard to start? What about the performance when it is going? Does it cough or back fire?

no it is not hard to start . the performance good ,no it does not cough or backfire
