what would cause the ticking sound and could it still be the cable if it's not broken and seems to turn well?

I think it is a worn or broken cable. Check out Moss Motors.

This is a something new. I have replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the carb.

I have a 1980 MGB which has been showing overheating without a clear cause. I had lost fluid and could not identify where from. Yesterday was very cool in Northeast and I drove with the interior heater on for five minutes and stopped for a few minutes .
