Is it worthwhile to replace a compressor which has a cracked housing + all the other parts necessary to
make the switch to R134 refrigerant?

To swap everything over you need to flush the system entirely. R12 uses a petroleum base {Ester} lubricant whereas 134A uses a synthetic {PAG} lubricant and they are not compatible. After flushing, change the receiver drier and get an expansion valve designed for the 134A, if you use R12 components it will not cool well at all.
