Asked by Dean Adam Jul 28, 2015 at 09:36 PM about the 1973 Plymouth Duster

Question type: Car Customization

I have 2 1973 dusters, one manual
and the other auto, I only wanna put
money into one of them, both in same
condition, but I want a new tranny and
haven't decided whether or not I want
auto or manual, I like the color on one,
but my question is.... Is it easier to
convert a manual transmission into
auto or vice versa?

how old are you? *****what do you want to do with it ?? show, go, restore, 1/4 mile, rally ******do you have the 904 or the 727 trans.. 340 ci/318 ci..the 909 uses less hp to get the job done..modern stall converters and kits will out run a stick...also no clutch changes... do you have the 4- speed manual ///???? both ways fun to build......

Your 3 speed auto is NOT going to outrun me with a 4 speed stick! Please. Look at at ANY car magazine from that era and everything else being equal the automatic will loose about every time against a competent 4 speed driver.

It depends. Manuals are fun but with new shift kits, better torque converters. That 904 series can be one quick transmission. There's a reason a lot of drag racers use them. Go out and look for an A999 (beefed up 904 with wide ratio gears). They're typically found in mid to late 80's Dodge Diplomat's, Chrysler 5th-avenues and some Vans. Put in a Cheetah Stage 2 Valve body. 2500 stall torque converter. You have one awesome hot street cruiser
