car wont idle - have to put in neutral and give it gas at stoplights. gas hog lately too

Lately at stoplights I have to put the car in idle and give it gas or it kills.  
Seems like I am going thru more gas as well

Scan for check engine codes. Could be as simple as a vacuum leak
