how do u check the trouble codes on a 2004 ford freestar

friends van was very low on fuel and then he put some in and when he
restarted it it coughed (maybe backfired) and ran rough for a while. when I
saw it it was running fine but check engine light is still on. judt wanted to find
out what the trick to get codes from it.
