Truck will start sometimes and sometimes it
will not. Code says i need to replace the erg
will this cause the truck to do this.

The EGR valve can get clogged up with carbon and cause various driveability conditions. To long to explain here, but there are a couple to test you can do to check if the EGR is bad. Check the net, there are probably several "how to" articles showing you how to test it.

Note: The EGR on your vehicle is electronically operated. Use the testing procedure for that one. A replacement valve costs about a hundred bucks. So do the test before you spend the cash.
