Tapping coming from motor

Asked by GuruBLQ Mar 17, 2017 at 10:54 AM about the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have some tapping come out of my 2008 Chevy Tahoe (5.3) - notice that
when I 1st start it in morning or after it hasnt been running in while I hear it
but slight, but enough I worry. Yesterday parked in a lot on cell, really didn't
drive the truck but no more than 10 min, parked for another 5 and tapping
got louder. When I am in drive - don't hear it. No engine light on. Checked oil
and good to go. HELP!! My husband was trying to say coming from my
exhaust when it first started and I know for a fact it isn't.

An exhaust leak can sound like a tapping, try using the technique in this video to determine if that is what's going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1AFZQ_dQMA - if you're exhaust checks out okay, try and determine is the tapping is equal to engine RPM or one-half. If it is one-half engine RPM, the tapping is coming from a lifter most likely (the camshaft and valve train spin at half the engine RPM). If it is equal to engine RPM, then tapping may come from a crank or rod bearing or wrist pin, a good mechanic can help you pinpoint just what is tapping and decide from there whether it's worth fixing.

I guess that is a start!! Thank you for the feedback!! I'm really not ready to buy a new truck right now!! lol
