I was given a 2008 honda civic with 170000 miles on it. I was told it needs a new engine. I'd rather pay 3-4k than buy a new one. It should last another 5 years. Any thoughts welcome!

Keep in mind that everything on the car has 170,000 miles on it. This includes expensive items to repair such as the transmission and air conditioning. It all depends on how it was driven and maintained.

I wouldn't pay more then $1,500.00. Like Bob said allot things can and will go wrong at 170 K
