73 el camino
What would be a good engine and transmission to
drop in a 73 el camino?? Its gonna be my first
project car ever.
Their 350 the most popular of the Chevrolet V8s the right engine for your 1973 ..low cost parts everywhere, every possible parts combination Dyno tuned no guessing been done 1000's of times what else can I say The 350V8 is Chevrolet. The 327 is there best engine but don't tell anyone, The 327 has a 3.250 stroke and the 350 has a 3.480 stroke. The cam is in the same location as is the deck height and they both have a 4.000 bore and a 5.700 long rod. With the longer stroke of the 350 you have increased the rod angle, so it try's to push the piston through the cylinder wall more than the shorter stroke 327. They are both great engines, (For Chevrolet) their lineage going back to 1955.
Ok thanks for the info. Really appreciate it. Any other input would be great too.
As stated above the 327 or the 350 were the most sought after, but if you want power go 396 or 454, it will go in without any cutting up the fenders with mods, personally I like the 454, and there is nothing like the sound of a big block rolling down the road. So basically your wide open, you've a lot of engine choices, it all depends on what exactly you want, do you want an everyday driver that looks and gets decent fuel mileage or something that wants to rip your head off on acceleration and the who cares about fuel mileage attitude. It's your rig, it's your choice. Take a look at summit racing engines, see if something there tickles your fancy.
Ok thank you! I will look into summit racing
You'll want to put a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 or 400 transmission behind your engine if you go with an automatic. HTH. -Jim
I recommend the 350 crate engine, look at Blueprint for one that are honest with numbers. I have two 70's one old 350 built up and one with 396 punched and stroked to 427. The 350 is more fun to drive, less trouble and much lighter. Like children you don't have a favorite but I say 350 for first hooked to turbo 350.
keep it original. find what engine was on the 1973 build sheet.
Original is best
